A Bold Move for Lamborghini

So. Lamborghini just made an SUV. Let's get cracking.

So, as many know, the market of sports SUV vehicles is quite full, with many car manufacturers having their own. Be it Jaguar with their E-Pace and F-Pace, Mercedes with their 'G' range, BMW with their 'X' range or even the famed Luxury Range Rover. But we've rarely heard of supercar makers releasing SUVs of their own. Mind you this isn't the first SUV Lamborghini have released. That title goes to the Lamborghini LM-002 which, to me, looks more like a Hummer on steroids rather than a Lamborghini. It was produced from 1986 to 1993, weighed 2.7 tons and was powered by a 7.2 litre V12 ! Yeah I don't imagine this was economical to run at all. The quirkiness of the car also added to the overall weirdness in my opinion.

When one thinks of Lamborghini, they think of low riding, 2 door supercars which lay flush to the ground, rear engined and with that signature Italian design reminiscent of Lamborghini. The Aventador, the Huracan, the Murcielago, all come to mind, but never an SUV. The Urus originally came about as a concept car back in 2012 and due to high demand was made into a production model with slight changes to design. When looking at it, to me it looks like a lifted Huracan, it's odd to say the least. Many people like it, many people hate it, to me it's in between. It's my guilty pleasure, in the sense that it looks weird and quirky, but the more I look at it , the more it grows on me and the more I like it.

Let's get into the details and what makes it different from its competitors. It boasts a 4 litre Twin-Turbo V8 which makes a mind-boggling 650bhp. Combining that with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an engine which can rev all the way up to 6,800 revs and you have an SUV with a top speed of 305 kilometres per hour and a 0-100 time of 3.6 seconds. WOW. This gives it the title of the fastest Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and what Lamborghini claims is "the first Super Sports Utility Vehicle". This car doesn't just look intimidating, it has the numbers to back it up.

It has all wheel drive and a dynamic driving system allowing it to adapt to different kinds of terrain. All this doesn't come at the price of luxury however, and as soon as you look at the interior you'll see what I mean. Leather stitching, two centre touchscreens, a digital dial and sporty accents all work together to make a sports luxury hybrid interior come to life.

One question comes to my mind in all this. Why ? Why make an SUV when you've already established aa leaniage of super cars which are all successful ? Why switch to a completely different market ? Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali had this to say in an interview:

Urus means for Lamborghini a lot of things. First of all it's a point of no return in terms of growth, in terms of dimension, in terms of presence of our brand in this sector of the automotive industry. So it's a great challenge, great investment. A lot of people are coming in. New markets doubling the size of the volume in the next two years. So it's an incredible experience. We live with an incredible enthusiasm. All the women and men here at Lamborghini understand that and we are already projecting into the future.

So, to me, this is a way for Lamborghini to show how they can use all that they have learned throughout the years and not just keep using it on their supercars, but implementing all of that knowledge into a new sector, leading to the innovation and development that Lamborghini are known for. This is a new venture for them, and they have nailed it excellently and achieved something noteworthy. Kudos Lamborghini, you deserve it.

That's my two cents on the new Lamborghini Urus, a bold move, done well.

Peace petrolheads,
Damian
